I am FITori and welcome to my Blog!

I created this blog at fitori.blogspot.com from the encouragement of my best friend who pushed me to start a blog about my passion, which I am always talking about!  It started as a way to inspire others the way I have been inspired and to share what inspires me.  It turns out, YOU are what inspires me!  But, I also want to share with you what I have learned through my years of research, trial & many errors in health and fitness.

For me, this blog is a great place for me to document my fitness journey.  In 2009, I decided to compete, but transferred that goal to 2010 so I could bulk and compete in Figure.  This blog was my accountability and I posted my journey along the way as well as what I've learned from the entire experience.  I've learned from your comments, emails and blogs also.  

This blog is not just about fitness though.  I also blog about the things I love, things that inspire and motive me, things that make me happy or sad or angry, my favorite things, and things that I've learned, for starters.  I want this blog to be...Inspiration for a balanced and happy life....in health, fitness, home, relationships and within yourself.

I want you to BE WHO YOU ADMIRE!

recipe | carrot banana muffins

These muffins are amazing and they were suggested by an amazing friend of mine. She is truly inspiring!  She and her husband are examples of living a healthy lifestyle in every way – mentally, spiritually, and physically.  They are also great examples of how to create the life you want!  You can find Joy here.

This is a recipe that her entire family raved about!  And, she had to share it!  I’m so glad she did because we love it here also!

There is NO FLOUR and NO SUGAR in this recipe. It’s gluten-free.  They are sweetened entirely with fruit.  They taste fantastic!  They make the house smell fantastic and I think they’re better after they cool!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups blanched almond flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon celtic sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup pitted dates
  • 3 ripe bananas
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon apple cidar vinegar
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1 1/2 cups carrots, shredded
  • 3/4 cup walnuts, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine almond flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon
  2. In a food processor, combine dates, bananas, eggs, vinegar and oil
  3. Transfer mixture to a large bowl
  4. Blend dry mixture into wet until thoroughly combined
  5. Fold in carrots and walnuts
  6. Spoon mixture into paper lined muffin tins
  7. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes

recipe | cinnamon-walnut oatmeal cookies

So, I spent a couple hours going to the grocery store and the health food store to get ingredients for two different recipes.  Of course! When I get home, I am missing an ingredient for each of the recipes that I intended to make. That is standard for me!  So, I switched gears and picked a recipe that I had all the ingredients for, or so I thought….and I started.  I didn’t have WW pastry flour but did have WW flour and they turned out just fine.  BTW, I used dark brown sugar so mine are a little darker than the original recipe.  **Tip: don’t tell the husband or kids that there are prunes in these cookies!**

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pitted prunes
  • 1 cup walnuts
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup canola oil
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup whole wheat pastry flour (I used ww flour)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350.  Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside.

Put prunes, walnuts and sugar into food processor and pulse until finely chopped.  In a large bowl, whisk together egg, vanilla, baking soda, applesauce and oil.  Stir in prune mixture then add oats, flour, cinnamon and salt and stir until just combined.

Drop dough by the spoonful onto prepared baking sheets.  Moisten your fingertips with a bit of water then gently press down each cookie to make a round shape.  (They way they go in will be the way they come out of the oven.)  Bake until cooked through and deep golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.  Transfer to wire racks and set aside to let cool.  (I prefer baking for 15-17 minutes – makes them chewy.)

Nutrition facts (per cookie = approx 1 oz)

90 calories (35 from fat) * 4 g total fat * 0 g saturated fat * 5 mg cholesteral * 10 mg sodium * 11 g total carbohydrate  (1 g dietary fiber, 5 g sugar), 2g protein

fertility | what is this?

I wanted to take a minute to clarify what I’m doing here with my fertility series.

I am sharing with you what I have found in my MANY HOURS of reading on nutrition.

I am telling you that I research all things nutrition and that it is my passion, including fertility, pregnancy and nursing.

I am telling you what I have found and a great deal of that is contradictory or unproven.

I am telling you to make your own decisions about what you will eat and feed your families!

I subscribe to the notion that it’s better to be aware than not.

I soak up as much information as I can, from every source I can.

I then take that information and I decide what I will believe and do with that information.

That’s how I live my life!  All of my hours of gathering information I feel may be useful to others, so I am sharing.

Some things I read may not have been proven yet, but if it makes sense to me, I’m passing it along to you.

When there were indicators that smoking was bad, should we have waited to find out for sure, with years of conclusive research before we quit? No!  I think and hope that we are just scratching the surface of a similar situation with our “industrial foods” and hope that through years of studies and research some of these “theories” will be proven.

I believe that the readers of my blog are smart and capable of making decisions on their own. I do not judge you for the decisions you make. I am human and I am not perfect.  But, I believe in making as many good decisions as I can.  I have read many things that alarm me about the foods that we eat without question in this country and  I want to pass along these things to you.  I think we are better for knowing, regardless of what we do with that information.

If there is one time in our lives that we should pay close attention to what we put in our bodies it is when our bodies are no longer our own!

For me, the thought of pregnancy creates an intense feeling in me that my food choices are MUCH more important than when they were just to make me skinny, like in my college years.

Now I have to think about feeding my body to be fertile and do what God intended, and to sustain and grow the healthiest baby possible and then to nurse him/her and later to lead by example and give him/her the tools to be healthy in his/her later life!

Please share your research with me.  We are all better for sharing our experiences and our knowledge with each other.  Knowledge is power!

I had an assignment this week in my Masters class to list 100 of my ethical beliefs in one-sentence statements.  They were supposed to be ethical beliefs and not personal beliefs, but I had a really hard time with ALL ONE HUNDRED!  So, I thought I’d share them with you and encourage you to do the same. It was a neat challenge!  (Please do not judge, criticize or fight with me about these since some of them are political and religious in nature.)

  1. I believe in God.
  2. I believe God is forgiving.
  3. I believe that God does not care what religion you are as long as you accept Him.

fertility | no trans fats

No surprise here….TRANS FATS ARE BAD!  Basically what I’m coming up with in ALL of my nutrition research is EAT REAL FOOD.  Trans fat is NOT real food!  The effects of trans fats are not all known, but we do know….

  • Trans fats are not real food!  Eat real food!
  • Trans fats = greater chance of ovulatory infertility
  • 4g / day of trans fats showed effects on fertility (BTW, 4g = one donut, 2T stick margarine or 1 med order of french fries!)
  • Trans fats make the body more resilient to insulin (higher blood sugar + insulin = reduced fertility)
  • Trans fats increase inflammation in the body which interferes w/ ovulation, conception and early embryonic development (BTW, it also assists in creating a great environment for disease…inflammation in the body = bad)

Read labels because 0 Trans Fats can mean that there are .49g of trans fats per serving and if you eat 2 servings, you’re essentially getting 2g of trans fats!  When reading labels and eating out, look for trans fats here….

  • partially hydrogenated soybean oil
  • hard margarine
  • commercially baked goods, cookies, crackers, donuts (pancake mixes, popcorn, granola, protein bars, etc)
  • fast foods
  • restaurant fried foods
  • baking with shortening or hard margarine

There are a few companies that are finally getting on the bandwagon with cutting out trans fats. I’d like to give them a shout out! Let me know if you know of more!

  • Ruby Tuesday
  • Some Frito Lay products
  • Trans Fat Free Crisco & Oreos

**Please remember that FATS are good, but TRANS FATS are bad! Make sure you are eating good fats, such as nuts, nut butters, olive oil, avocado, etc!**

July 21, 2010 - 7:05 pm Cliff - Great! I think your math is a little off but really awesome. Fats are really good for you... in moderation (0.5 X 2 = 1). Which brings us back to the full fat dairy topic... the forms of cholesterol in these foods can be converted to the appropriate hormones in the body required not only to be fertile but to maintain the pregnancy. I had a nutrition prof once tell me that morning sickness, although dreaded, is a great sign that your hormones are changing properly to maintain the pregnancy... this change is a must.

I need to ask you some questions about saturated fats since I'm the current "research" I'm doing is saying that some saturated fats are necessary w/ both mono- and poly- but other places say that all saturated fats are bad. Thoughts, Cliff?

July 22, 2010 - 8:20 am Cliff - Everything in moderation. Saturated fats are so ubiquitously found in our foods that even an attempt to completely remove them from your diet would result in probably receiving a good dose of them. The American Dietetic Association (the people who are all registered dietitians and make the food pyramids with the USDA) recommend that of your 30% daily fat intake that it is split into three: 10% Saturated, 10% Poly, 10% Mono. People do play with these ratio and since everybody reacts differently to chemicals a ratio of 5:12.5:12.5 may be more optimal for your body while for me it ma be 10:7.5:12.5. Since American diets are so rich in animal products it is best to probably limit the saturated fats because by doing so you will meet your requirement.

fertility | no low fat dairy

So, here it is….my series on fertility, pregnancy and nursing nutrition.  I will try to pass along all of my research, in small doses!

There is a lot of research on hormones in our food effecting our estrogen levels and thus our fertility!  There is “new” research that low fat dairy can effect ovulation due to the hormones!  So, if you’re trying to get pregnant, it is advised that you switch to FULL FAT DAIRY.

Much of my research in trying to decide which milk is best…cow, soy, almond, etc…has led me to the fact that as adults, we do not need dairy at all!  If you like it, great, eat or drink it. If not, eat your leafy greens, nuts and take your multi-vitamin and you’ll be fine. (Interesting research on the dairy industry and food politics!)

Dairy is optional. But, if you choose to eat dairy and are trying to get pregnant….

  • as little as ONE serving of low fat dairy can decrease your fertility
  • no whey protein
  • If you cut out red or processed meats, it may help to compensate for the extra calories in the full fat diary
  • Once pregnant or no longer trying to conceive, you can switch back to low fat dairy if you wish ( I’m currently doing research that may suggest otherwise….more on that later)
  • High amounts of dairy actually block iron absorption

Serving sizes are important to maintain weight so I will be including some info on appropriate serving sizes. You can vary these but it’s a nice guideline to have. (For example, I usually only add .5 to 1 oz of cheese to my eggs so 1.5 oz seems high.)

Serving Sizes

  • Milk or yogurt                                  1 cup
  • Cheese (cheddar or swiss)           1.5 oz / 45 g

July 20, 2010 - 5:57 pm Emily - I think it's absolutely fantastic that you're doing this. So many people have no clue how the foods they eat affect their body. It wasn't until we had trouble conceiving that I started to delve into all the nitty gritty details. It's shocking they don't teach you this stuff in high school biology! I'm going to add a few things for you that I discovered in my own research-- People who are big fans of soy should know that it acts as a false estrogen. The drug I took to conceive Andrew-- Clomid, can be replaced by taking doses of soy isoflavones in a similar pattern ie a set amount on 5-8 consecutive cycle days early in the cycle. Another thing many people don't know is that green tea prevents the absorption of folic acid so it's really important to stay away from that while you are ttc or pregnant. A lot of people drink it for the other health benefits but I won't touch the stuff with a 10 foot pole. So there ya go, my tiny contribution to your work! You're doing great stuff :)

I did the full fat dairy nutrition when trying to conceive though (and that's what my husband prefers so it was convenient too). :)

July 21, 2010 - 5:11 am Ellen - Tori - you have some great information. I am a nutritionist for Women, Infants, and Children, and friend from high school. I want to let you know a little bit more about the comment "High amounts of dairy actually block iron absorption". Calcium blocks iron absorption, so if you take a supplement for calcium, Don't take it at the same time as prenatal vitamins or iron tablets. It reduces the absorption of iron and folate. Many women just take all their supplements at once. Take one at night and one in the morning. Usually women like to take supplements containing iron at night, b/c it often causes upset stomach.

July 22, 2010 - 12:25 pm Shibahn - I'm not killing the messenger at all... picking brains. But I find some of these facts to be a little anecdotal rather than based on research. "Whey" protein is found in milk... so therefore cutting out whey is nearly impossible in whole milk. True? Additionally, the hormones (from the cow) found in the whole milk would obviously be more than the hormones found in the skim milk, so of course scientists recommend drinking the full fat milk. Interesting information though. And I don't drink Starbucks.

July 22, 2010 - 4:36 pm tori - I wish I didn't drink Starbucks :-/ It's one of my favorite occasional treats! I am just passing along the notes on the books that I have read. Feel free to disagree or do your own research. From the info I have read when the fat its removed from the whole milk to make it skim, there are chemicals and proteins added and the balance of hormones is changed and can affect fertility negatively. There was a "prospective study of dairy foods intake and anovulatory infertility" in 2007 that showed that even one serving a day of low- or no-fat dairy product increased the risk of problems getting pregnant. Again, take it for what it's worth. If you're not having problems, who cares. I think it's interesting. I know there are women who get pregnant every day that are eating low- or no-fat dairy products! But, if it's a concern for you....here is some info. To me, if there is possible research out there that shows, for example, that there is information that says that it is possible, but still inconclusive, that caffeine may cause miscarriage, I am not willing to take the risk. That is my opinion. Even if the research is not clear yet, i want to know about it so I can live as healthy as I can and be aware of "possible" risks, whether anecdotal or proven and I will make up my mind either way. That is what i'm doing here with my blog posts.

Figure Lessons

(Sorry this has taken so long…I have been sick off and on since the show, my computer has been acting up for a month, and I have been a really busy girl, living the life that I missed out on during contest prep.)

I learned SOOO much during the preparation this past year for my Figure Show.  Life is about the journey, not the destination.  That is a very true statement regarding this show for me.  The goal was to get in the best shape of my life before we had kids and to achieve the goal of getting on the Figure Stage…well, I didn’t quite make that goal because I ended up on the Bikini Stage, but my goals kind of changed during the process.  Please do not take offense to any of this.  This is my personal journey and what I learned and gained for ME during MY journey. I personally do not think I will compete again and hope that I do not offend any of my competitor friends!  I still support you in your decisions and your goals…and may change my mind, but for now…it’s just not for me. I hope you understand after reading this post, but again, please do not take any of this personally since it is simply my personal opinion and inner conflict.

Currently, I’m trying to figure out what diets work for my body. I’m trying to slowly get back to a place where I can eat “normally” which is not normal for the typical American but normal for a healthy American….which is still freaky to most.  I am still taking what I learned about losing weight and trying to apply it to maintaining weight which is a totally different world that I know nothing about!  And my body is not responding all that well.  According to my trainer, for me, for now, 1100 – 1400 calories is “maintenance” until I get my body back the way it was….used to the normal 2000 calories. BTW, that is with continued exercise!  So….not “normal”  and not a whole lot of food.

Physically, from the process, I learned a lot about what to do to get in shape and stay in shape. I learned about portion control and meal timing.  I learned how to season my foods without butter or oil but instead, exploring herbs and seasonings.  I’ve experimented with healthy meals, making healthy breakfast pancakes out of egg whites and oatmeal.  I’ve made really tasty, low fat and low cal fish recipes.  I discovered that I can remove things from my diet that I never thought. I added in diet soda (bad idea) and then later removed it (after thinking I’d be hooked forever).  I learned to drink herbal tea.  I learned that cutting out salt and caffeine is possible. I learned to drink coffee black (though I only did that out of necessity…my creamer is a luxury I’m not yet willing to give up long-term).  I learned to listen to my body and truly understand the cues it is giving me. I truly know low blood sugar and hunger and what that feels like. I truly know when it is time to eat and when it is a time that I am just eating to eat.  (Don’t get me wrong…I am not perfect….this is still a learning process, even for me.)  I now know what being tired feels like and how taking a nap is way more beneficial than trying to eat my way alert.  I learned that I will always have to watch my portions…..for the rest of my life. (At least I think so now, just after contest, when my “maintenance” calories are still well below the average person due to what I’ve put my body through.)  I learned that during contest prep (or hard-core dieting) I am starving around lunchtime or the few hours later, sometime between 1 and 3 pm every day I will want to eat everything I can get my hands on!  I learned it takes me 20-30 minutes to feel full so I have to portion my meals out before I sit down with my meals, eat, drink water and wait or I will always eat more calories than I need.   I love to eat. I will always love to eat. I even love to eat healthy foods. Food is so fun and exciting……all the great combinationa and new tastes and flavors!  I will always have to pay attention to how much I am eating and be mindful of that or I will gain weight.

Most importantly throughout this process, I changed my mindset. I want to eat healthy now! I WANT to eat healthy now!  I choose healthy versions of foods over unhealthy ones, for the most part. I prefer healthier options. I prefer fruits over cookies…most of the time :)   I don’t look at cookies anymore with a “whoa is me. why can’t i have those cookies. when can i have those cookies. as soon as contest prep is over i can have those cookies.”  Instead, I think, “cookies sound good. maybe next week i’ll make something similar with oats and raisins.”  Or, even better, it doesn’t phase me or I think about having fruit instead.  That is probably the best thing I took from this.  I also learned that I am not always in control when I start eating crappy.  I have a hard time stopping.  I am better off not starting at all!  Or picking healthier options that actually fill me up! When I eat garbage (simple sugars that do not trigger satiety) I feel like a bottomless pit that cannot be filled up and since those foods are already calorie dense, I eat a tremendous amount of calories in one sitting.  I have to not start.  And, that is getting easier. It is a lifestyle shift that we have had to make in our home to not have those things in the house…at all!  And we have learned through trial and error how we feel when we eat crappy foods.  We enjoy the taste of real foods and we enjoy how we feel when we eat them. Profound! :)

I learned that Figure competitions are NOT for me! I do not plan to ever compete in Figure or prepare for another Figure Competition again. I thought I was competing in Figure until the night before the show. I signed up for and paid for both Figure & Bikini but found out the night before that I had to choose. My trainer and the judge that I asked both agreed that I was better suited for Bikini. I did not get lean enough for Figure. I had a cross-road (a few of them) where I had to decide…..am I willing to push my body this hard to get to be leaner than I feel is healthy?  For me, it was a huge decision to make. I entered into this wanting to put my very best package on stage and look like a competitor in Oxygen Magazine.  I ended up wanting to put my very best package on stage, but knew that would NOT look like the girls in Oxygen Magazine because I was not willing to get that lean, not right now, and not that quick. I didn’t understand what it meant to get that lean when I originally set out to get on stage. I learned what that meant during this process.  By understanding that process, I now have a greater respect for my body. I no longer look at those Figure Girls (no offense to anyone) and wish I could look like them. My opinion of what I want to look like has changed….probably because I now understand what it takes to get to that level of body fat and I also have adjusted my opinion of what “healthy” means for me.  I no longer look at those girls and berate myself with internal dialogue…thinking how lazy I am for not looking like them.  I no longer look at them and beat myself up for not looking like that.  Instead, I look at that and I am happy for them. I understand (for the most part) what it takes to get there and more power to them! But, it’s not for me!!

For me, it took too many sacrifices.  I felt like I was sacrificing everything, for what? To look good? It became a huge conflict for me.  I felt like I was giving up things that were truly more important than looking good!  It took 2-3 hours a day at the gym that I could be spending with my husband, my friends and family, working, working on my masters, enjoying “me” time, working on my hobbies, etc.  That time commitment doesn’t include the time to practice posing, research posing, order all of the products needed for the show, book makeup, hair and nails, etc.  It goes on and on. The time commitment was rough!  Even when I had the time I didn’t feel like myself. I didn’t have any energy. I gave half of myself to everything – family, friends, work, school.  It was a struggle to function.  (I had a trainer tell me at one point that “you will feel bad during this process. It is not normal to push your body this low in body fat.”  Whaat??!!! I wish I had known what that meant a year ago, but I had to learn it myself by living it….and that I did!

Also, I knew it would cost money but didn’t think it’d be that bad! It was really expensive. Suits, hair, tan, NPC card, entrance fees, shoes, etc. etc.  It cost more money than I thought was necessary.  There were other things I would have liked to have spent that money on.  I missed out on going places with friends because of food or I went anyway and had the focus all on me because it was hard to blend in and I was focused on the food in front of me because my body was literally starving.  I tried to blend in not eating and it was awkward. Then, I had to talk about the show, which I didn’t want to do.  I feel, in part, that I lost out on time. I was waiting for the contest to be over so that I could enjoy living my life again. Now, I’m enjoying my life and trying to enjoy every invitation I get so I’m overbooking myself a bit trying to make up for lost time!  Toward the end all the signs were saying this is not for me and stop this! I finished it out but I am glad it’s over and I do not want to go back to that time!  I felt like I was being untrue to myself to finish that goal and I’m glad I finished it but it was really hard mentally toward the end when I truly felt as though I didn’t believe in what I was doing but I was doing it anyway.

I learned that the things that competitors put into their bodies to make them lean isn’t always healthy.  I learned that fat burners are not healthy.  I lost sight of that when I started getting obsessed with meeting my goal quickly and when trainers were telling me what to take, I started following blindly at one point. I felt HORRIBLE though after taking fat burners for a few days – I couldn’t sleep, I felt awful and figured out that it wasn’t worth it!  It didn’t make any sense!  Why would I ingest something that would make me look good and feel bad?! It made no sense, so I stopped and at that point I decided that I would be as healthy as I could for the remaining month or so until the competition and then I’d be done! I also decided that if I ever did this again, I’d do it on my own time schedule.  And, I wouldn’t ever plan to get as lean as a Figure Competitor but might do Bikini again.  I learned that, for the most part, competitors choose to use artificial sweeteners and artificial butters, rather than just a little of the “real” stuff.  Which is healthier? You be the judge.  It is a personal decision that we each have to make for ourselves and for our families!  Is it better to carry an extra 5 lbs and be eating real foods than be extremely (unnaturally maybe) thin and be eating chemicals to stay that way? For me, yes!  What is healthy?  Healthy, to me, means a lot of things and I have  a lengthy blog post coming on this. As I mentioned before, I do not believe that adding chemicals into our foods is “healthy” in order to stay skinny. I would rather be a little heavier and eat real foods. I find it hard to ingest chemicals for vanity.  That’s just me!

Since the show, I have realized that some rebound HAS to happen due to the extremes we put our bodies through during competition prep. I find this ludicrous. I have taxed my body so hard that I am unable to maintain the body that I worked so hard for without continuing my 2-3 hour workouts and 1100 calorie diet?  In order to maintain my current weight I need to still be eating around 1100-1400 calories and keep up those workouts. It’s tough after 1.5 years of dieting to consider that to be a healthy option for me ! I am struggling with this right now. I’m wondering why I did that to my body when this is the outcome. I am trying to maintain, though I’m 10 pounds heavier than I was on stage, and 5 pounds heavier than I’d like.  Those last 5 pounds were from my recent travels – I was only home 2 days/week over the last month.  The thought of dieting off those 5 pounds scares me though….because I’m concerned it slow down the process of trying to get my body back responding to food like a normal person’s body would!

I am enjoying eating healthy and balanced. I will enjoy working out again once I am better. I have been sick every other week since the show and these last two weeks I have been REALLY sick with a cold/sinus infection that is rough, so my workouts have not been the best.  I have been trying to rest and get better and hopefully get my immune system functioning properly again.   I want to be a more balanced me and I know I will find that when my body starts responding to treating it with respect again.  I am living a truly balanced and happy life now and am letting my body come back to balance when it is ready, hopefully sooner than later!

July 18, 2010 - 1:50 pm April - This is such a great post! I feel I could have written it. I'm going through a phase where no matter how "little" I eat or how hard I workout I am gaining grrr....Sometimes I feel it's not worth it. I need to let my body take it's course. However, i'm thinking of competing in bikini this November ;) Part of me wants to and the other part just needs a goal. We shall see :)

July 18, 2010 - 8:40 pm Clifford Froelich - Great post. In an attempt to lose people feel they need to reach extremes to continue observing their "gains". The funny thing is that in an attempt to lose weight the natural thing is to eat less. This unfortunately is the greatest mistake. The body responds in a survival mechanism... it lowers the basal metabolic rate (it slows the body's metabolism). The key is to eat more. Eat low calorie, high fiber, lean foods that will continue the already increased metabolism (the increased metabolism of gained muscle). Look at the pros... they eat all of the time and absolutely hate it because it consumes their life. Their jaws tire and the cost of food is obscene but it works. The biggest problem that I observe is getting off of the lifestyle. Once in the habit of eating all of the time results in an extreme hunger when trying to normalize life. It is a lot like what you have been experiencing...normal is hard when you have shifted the homeostasis of life too far in one direction. I too am exploring the enjoyment of every bite and every step of a workout... living life as it meets me and relishing it. Good luck with your endeavors!

I learned some of that, although I didn't get as far as competing...but there is a whole other side to it, isn't there? It is something I won't ever do, so not worth the tradeoffs IMO. July 20, 2010 - 7:34 pm joy - Love this! A couple of thoughts on your reflections: On Sacrifice: You can tell a lot about what a person values by where they spend their time and money. These are two of our most valuable assets. We actually see Time as being more valuable than money since we can't get it back and the reward is so rich. I think you are right on in realizing that when you are spending hours in the gym, you are missing out on time with friends and family and ultimately being useful to God's kingdom. Matthew 6: 19"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." As for your body, just keep eating well and working out (doing what is fun and enjoyable - even just going for a walk or taking a class with C). Even take a little bit of time off, if that's what you need. I think you are right that your body is reacting to all the stress it was under in your efforts to prepare for competition. You'll bounce back. The most important thing is to be healthy - physically, mentally and spiritually. The quote from Erik is a mindset of working with our design instead of forcing things into a box. I think there are both schools of thought out there on any medium (food, baby care, labor and delivery, medicine etc) - I love searching for the balance. Great work here Tori!!! The Today Show had this story about what is REALLY in your diet food. I have a real problem with this and thought I’d share. The story talked about ALL of the people that are eating this food in order to diet. WHAT?! STOP IT! If you are eating these to lose weight…STOP IT! EAT REAL FOOD! QUIT EATING FOOD THAT COMES IN A BOX!

Take a look at the ingredient list to the left. I copied this from http://www.foodfacts.com/members/item_info.cfm?item=17062 where they showed the ingredients and highlighted the “controversial” ones. This is from Weight Watchers Smart Ones Meatloaf with Gravy and Garlic-Herbed Mashed Potatoes.

I have nothing against Weight Watchers or these other companies that make these meals. They are trying to make low cal, low fat meals for people and PEOPLE ARE BUYING THEM, so they keep making them. There are definitely much worse meals out there – like fast food or other restaurant meals, BUT there are MUCH better options for lunch or dinner.

Take the extra time on the weekends to precook some of these meals and have them ready to serve for dinner. Make 2 meatloaves on Sunday and Garlic-Herbed Mashed Potatoes and have them in tupperware in your fridge. You can use these same foods to take to work for lunch as well.  Watch your portions BUT IT’S REAL FOOD! Look at that ingredient list again if you are curious why you should eat real food! Enough said.

You don’t know what you’re getting when you buy a pre-cooked, pre-packaged, pre-preserved meal from a box!  You have no idea what is in there, well you know it has a lot of stuff you’ve never heard of before but if you’re counting calories, you can’t count on those calorie counts to be accurate.  BUT, if you cook it at home, you know!

You can look up every nutrition fact you ever wanted on real foods. They are all on the internet. You just google it.  You should get a food scale (but if you read my blog you already have one).  You can weight a portion or estimate it once you have weighed your food for a while. It’s part of a process of learning what the correct portion sizes are.  A few good sources for nutritional data are:    www.nutritiondata.com     www.thedailyplate.com      caloriecount.about.com

Your body needs fuel. Your body needs real food in order to fuel your workouts, your duties as a wife and mother, friend and sister, daughter and student. You don’t need “artificially flavored” i.e. chemicals produced to make your food taste like meatloaf. I will try to help you out with recipes (when time permits) that will help you get and stay lean. I will not sacrifice my own cooking and prep time to blog because my health and my family’s health is of the utmost importance to me!

QUICK TIPS: Use the grille when you can to eliminate extra calories from butters, oils and sauces. Grille a batch of your family’s favorite meat – chicken breasts, salmon, tilapia. Make a batch of brown rice. Have frozen veggies in the freezer or salad in the fridge. Do all of this on Sunday for the week and your family has healthy meals ready to go!

Food for thought: Why do you think these companies don’t list their ingredients lists on their websites????

I used to eat a Lean Cuisine for lunch almost everyday... one day I took the time to read the ingredients and saw the amount of sodium and I quit! Now, I look forward to packing my lunches the night before and I am much more excited to eat my homemade lunch than a frozen meal.

What motivates you?

I was asked this question the other day by a friend and coworker…how do you stay motivated?  GREAT QUESTION!  I’ve been thinking about it ever since!

What is motivation? I looked it up.  For my generation, google to wikipedia is generally what we mean by researching a topic! :) Wikipedia says:  “Motivation is the activation or energization of goal-oriented behavior.  Motivation is said to be intrinsic or extrinsic.“  So true! After giving this some thought (so glad I did…thanks Robb) I am now aware that what motivates me may not motivate you.  What does that dinosaur running behind you represent?

What motivates me? I am an internally motivated person. I am Type A. Duh!  If you have talked to me for 5 seconds you have figured this out.  (See below for a very accurate description of me.)  I am motivated my myself and my need for success. I accept no less than the best from myself. I am very hard on myself. I care about the way I am viewed by the world, for the most part.  How does this relate to fitness? I want to be viewed by the world as a “fit” and healthy person, not lazy.  I am competitive internally, in my own head. I want to be the best that I can be all the time.  I remember that what you eat in private, shows in public. I am motivated my own need to “look” the way I want to be perceived and “look” the way I feel I am.  I want to “look” and “be” the person I believe I am.  I want to act in a way that is in line with the disciplined person that I want to be.  I am very hard on myself when I do not exercise disciplined eating, because that is not the best person I can be and the person I want to be.  This type of motivation only works for some people….

What is Type A? (Again, taken from Wikipedia) Type A individuals can be described as impatient, time-conscious, controlling, concerned about their status, highly competitive, ambitious, business-like, aggressive, having difficulty relaxing; and are sometimes disliked by individuals with Type B personalities for the way that they’re always rushing. (Side note:  I had a Type B trainer during my comp process…didn’t work out so well…)  They are often high-achieving workaholics who multi-task, drive themselves with deadlines, and are unhappy about delays. Because of these characteristics, Type A individuals are often described as “stress junkies.”

Are you intrinsically or extrinsically motivated? Are you motivated as I am, internally, by yourself, with internal drive that pushes you to be better….pushes you to go to the gym at 5am or eat healthy every 2.5 to 3 hours, every day?  If not, that’s ok!  That’s who you are!  Don’t try to change parts of your personality that you were born with. We are all different and unique and that is what is so wonderful about human relationships!  Most importantly, don’t beat yourself up for this!  Work with it! Do you need external motivation?  Find it!!! Think hard and try some things out! What motivates you?  Do you need a picture of your thin (or fat) self on the fridge or pantry to keep you from overeating?  Are you motivated by the fear of getting fat or the happiness of being thin? Are you motivated by a group all working together, knowing that your friends are doing this with you?  Try it!  Try it all! See what works!  Pay attention to what is working!  Keep a journal of how you’re doing so you can go back and look and see when you were most successful and why!  Try a group setting where you have a group of friends that set their own weight loss, muscle gain goals and keep each other on track. Find a workout buddy who will MAKE you get to the gym in the morning.  Tell the world of your goals so they will ask you and you can fear having to answer “Well, I haven’t really been doing that well lately….”  Start a blog so that we can all keep you on track.  Plan a vacation and hang that bikini on the closet wall as your motivation. 

Use health as your motivation!!! What FINALLY worked for me was HEALTH!  That is the ONLY thing that ever truly works for me to stick to a healthy eating plan.  I am able  to convince myself that a pint of ice cream will not affect my waist or my weight (right!) but I cannot convince myself that it is good for my health. I cannot convince myself that it will fuel my body to be able to do all the things I want to do.  I cannot convince myself that it is setting a good example for my friends, family and future children. I cannot convince myself that it is going to keep cancer out of my body and keep me living for decades longer feeling healthy and young!  If you can truly find HEALTH as a reason to eat HEALTHY I believe you can do this!! For years I would eat “less” in order to be “skinny” but that only works for a short time. That does not work forever and that does not work to achieve the healthy body you want.  Looking skinny is not our goal!!!  Being healthy and strong is our goal!!  Being healthy and strong comes with a beautiful, strong, healthy looking body! I truly believe that what is healthy for your body will help you achieve the look you want!  I am working toward that goal myself. I want to be able to eat ALL of the things that are healthy for my body and still LOOK the way I want to look (i.e. eating fruits and grains while still being lean….not quite in line with my contest prep diet).

June 12, 2010 - 8:44 am shawna - I know we've talked about this at length, but there was a significant shift in my thought process the moment I got pregnant. I used to be motivated by how the world viewed me, but now I am motivated because I am responsible for the health and perception of health of my daughter. I want her to grow up with healthy food & exercise as her NORMAL. I want her to just assume you exercise every day and eat real food. Then it will be easy for her. Added bonus of these behaviors...being 10lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight. By-product of behaviors, not the actual goal. Sweet! :D

June 24, 2010 - 9:08 am joy - Hey Tori, I've been chewing on this post since you posted it. Come to find out, I'm extrinsically motivated and I'm not Type A! Huh, I had no idea. I am motivated by my husband, friends (and right knowing that I'll be seeing old friends soon). I work best in teams. I need a cohort, someone who will go along with my idea or support me in a venture. I do even better when I am leading a group because my relaxed nature is pressed and I feel a sense of responsibility and accountability - this drives me to want to set a good example others should follow. I am also an idealist. I think of how things should be. This both gets me in trouble and also encourages me to be a role model. Thanks for the great thoughts! Can't wait to hang out in July!
