warning!! | Serrano chili peppers…ouch!

October 20, 2010 in health

This tiny chili pepper looks innocent. It’s smaller than my finger…really!  But, it’s wreaked havoc on me for DAYS!

FIRST, I cut up the chili pepper and evidently didn’t wash my hands well or it just didn’t come off! Then, I sneezed. Then, I used a tissue to wipe my nose.  YEEEOOOOUUUUUUCH!!  My nose started to BURN….like crazy!  What gets rid of chili pepper burning?  Not water…tried it.  Didn’t work.  ”I don’t know….google it.”  Hubby googled  it and comes back and soaks a paper towel in EVERCLEAR and sticks it up my nose…LOL!  RELEIF!!  It worked!!!

Cut to after dinner when I’m on the phone calling DirecTV and I touch the corner of my eye…..AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! My eye starts to burn and tear. Evidently this chili pepper is STILL on my fingers.  Hubby comes at me w/ the Everclear to which I say “You can’t put Everclear in my eyes, can you??!!”  He looks at me like I’ve lost my mind and pours it over my hands to try to get the peppers off.

It took a few days for this to wear off my hands.

Any suggestions for me for next time??!! BTW, check back tomorrow for my EXCELLENT stir fry recipe using these hot little buggers!!!

I have allergies and wear contacts so I’ve managed to set both my eyes and nose on fire beofre! lol Not pretty.

My method of choice is to coat my hands in olive oil – it creates a protective layer that will prevent your fingers from picking up too much of the spicy stuff. Alternatively you could wear gloves to chop up the peppers.

Best of luck! :)

It is Capsaicin that is doing the deed. Capsaicin acts as an acid. Soak your finger in milk or baking soda (in water)… both will neutralize the chemical.

Love that you happened to have Everclear on hand. I’m sure it was for just such an occasion as this. :o )
